What is a Chimney Sweep?

A chimney sweep is a process of which ash, soot, dirt and sometimes even animal nesting material is removed from chimney flues.

How often should my chimney be cleaned?

It is recommended by the National Fire Protection Agency that your chimney undergo a yearly inspection, with cleaning and repairs done as necessary.

Do I need to have my chimney cleaned if I heat with gas?

Yes. Gas is a clean burning fuel that does not leave ash or soot behind, however your chimney may become non-fuctional due to birds nests and other debris. It is also recommended to have your chimney inspected annually to avoid carbon monoxide issues which are almost always the result of poor ventilation.

Will a chimney cleaning leave dust all over my house?

No. Here at Miller's Chimney we always lay cloth tarps and cloth runners down around the working area. We use vacuums and other systems designed for dust control. Your home will be in the same shape it was before our technician arrived.

What should I do if my fireplace smells?

The stench is most likely the result of creosote deposits, a natural wood-burning byproduct. The summer humidity tends to make it worse. A good annual cleaning may or may not solve the problem, and preferred solutions vary.

What is a chimney liner?

A chimney liner is a stainless steel tube inserted inside of chimney to vent a woodstove, furnace or fireplace. Without one, the heat would transfer through brick and mortar causing the chimney to deteriorate.

What is the difference between a Level I and Level II Inspection?

A Level I Inspection is a visual inspection done with basic digital photography, and is recommended for a chimney that receives continued service. A Level II Inspection is required when any changes are made to the system or the property changes hands. It's done with a closed-circuit video camera.
